Workshop Topics and Dates:

June 27
Traipsing and Waltzing Hither
and Yon—Promenades for Belly Dancers

OK standing in place but don‚t know how to get across the floor and still look and feel like a dancer? This workshop will focus on dance conditioning training and technique for learning to walk like a dancer, and promenade across the floor, using floor patterns and belly dance movements. Learn how to psychically define your space. This workshop will also introduce basic Spins, Turns, Arabesques and Attitudes both with and without the veil, and dance conditioning training and technique for proper positioning and posture of the upper body for graceful and beautiful arms and hands while dancing.

July 11
Belly Gram—
Anatomy of a Belly Gram (Lecture, Demonstration and Rehearsal)

Belly Grams can be a fun, lucrative and demonstrative way to perform as a Belly dancer in public and for private parties. How to conduct a belly gram will be discussed and played out in detail. We will practice ways to orchestrate your show and use props for a fun, effective and smooth performance that will enliven any occasion. This workshop is back by popular demand!

July 18
Veil Work—
Unwinding your Veil

Learn several different and unique ways to wrap the veil and different ways of unwrapping it, while dancing during a performance, will be explored and practiced during this very helpful workshop. Having clear techniques for veil wraps is essential to creating a smooth transition between our first and second songs during the traditional routine. We will explore how to have our veils on just right ˆ snug enough to survive the first piece without falling off our bodies too soon, and easily removable for a graceful "unveiling".

July 25
Advanced Floor Work with Finger Cymbals
We will cover technique and specific movement combinations for belly dancing floor work, including how to play the zills while dancing to a heavy chiftitelli. Learn how to descend, rise, and move while dancing floor work and zill. Floor work and zill work are rarely seen, and very rarely seen done well. Let‚s revitalize this beautiful, hypnotic and strong aspect of the traditional belly dance routine. It will give your dancing dynamics, depth and strength. If you missed past floor work workshops, attend this one!

August 1

Basic Finger Cymbals and Rhythm Review Back by Popular Demand!

If you are new to or uncomfortable with playing the finger cymbals while dancing or performing, this workshop is for you. Basic rhythms commonly played during a traditional belly dance show will be reviewed and analyzed. I will teach you the base rhythms and how to play them on your finger cymbals while dancing. This is a great review for experienced dancers as well as an excellent introduction for new students who wish to be come more familiar with the basic rhythms.

Pilates is a series of challenging and invigorating exercises which, once learned properly, can be practiced at will at home. The carefully constructed movements are designed to help the student find his or her center, develop a strong inner core of deep abdominal muscles while sculpting the entire body, lengthening and strengthening the musculature, and correcting imbalances while enhancing posture, stimulating circulation and mental awareness. This is an excellent exercise regiment for everybody - 8 to 80, and particularly good for those already athletic, or dancers. BalancePoint Pilates is based on the traditional 34 exercises, methodology and philosophy, designed by Joseph Pilates. Please bring an exercise or flat yoga mat, and wear comfortable or gym clothing.

Sabrina Tarulli, Certified BalancePoint Pilates Instructor since 2004, has been studying Pilates since 2001 and is a professional dancer, dance teacher, and athlete. She has
been an exercise instructor since 1986 with extensive experience practicing and teaching
Alexander technique, modern
and belly dance, yoga, calisthenics and aerobics.

Hip belts, Finger Cymbals and Veils — Useful items for belly dance class

Hip Belts: Hip belts are scarves
worn low over the hips and buttocks, fashioned with coins and beads, designed to help us feel, hear and delight in the movements and rhythms of oriental music in class.

I carry hip belts for $25 - $75.

Finger Cymbals: Also known as Zills or Sagats, Finger cymbals come in gold or silver metal and are played with while dancing.

I carry student size zills that are $25 for brass and $30 for silver.

Saroyan (P: 909 783-2050) and Turquoise (P: 1 800 548-9422) are two companies that make zills for belly dancers: click the links above or call to order.

Veils: Veils are larger pieces of material that float and are used as part of the belly dance. 3 yards of polyester chiffon or fine gauge organza.

I carry veils for $25.
